In 2017 China became the world’s largest food consumer, importing 53,481 million tons of food, an increase of 36.5% over 2016. By 2019, China was importing more than USD $85 billion worth of processed foods and beverages, up from around USD $67.38 billion in 2018.
China’s top suppliers include the EU, Russia, the United States, Canada, Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Vietnam. In order of importance, imported foods include meats and poultry, edible oils, dairy products, aquatic products, cereals, wines, sugar, beverages, nuts, and pastries.
According to Euromonitor, retail sales in the packaged food market in China were estimated to reach $ 231.6 billion in 2017. That represents a growth rate of 24.2% or USD $45.1 billion since 2013. The growth forecast in this market is exceptional. By 2022, retail sales in China’s packaged food market are expected to reach US $325.3 billion, a growth rate of 32.2% or USD $79.2 billion.
