Asia, now the worlds most vibrant region for  fresh fruits and vegetables, is not only the origin but also represents the largest consumption market. In 2019, China imported USD $12.4 billion worth of fresh, dried, and frozen vegetables, fruits, berries, and nuts; growing by nearly 25 percent in comparison to 2018. 

 

Cherries continue to be China’s top fresh fruit import by value, with 14% of the total,  followed by table grapes and durian. Top players include oranges, longan and bananas, with yearly increases in  ratio of total import volumes of 61%, 52% and 17% respectively.

The  top ten list of fresh fruit exporters to China includes Thailand in first position as top exporter in terms of value, products include  longan, durian and mangosteen. Imports of Thai fresh fruit to China represent 21% of the total import value and were calculated at USD 1.2 billion in 2017.

In 2017 Chile came in on second place, selling over one billion USD in fresh fruits to China.  The list continues: Vietnam (USD 658 million), Philippines (USD 531 million), United States (USD 420 million), New Zealand (USD 354 million), Australia (USD 276 million), South Africa (227 million), Peru (USD 220 million), and Ecuador (USD nearly 100 million). These countries accounted for 89% of China’s fresh fruit imports in 2017.
